Elgg Performance and Scalability Discussion GroupThe Elgg team cares deeply about making sure Elgg is as fast as it can possibly be. That’s why we’ve been submitting lots of performance-enhancing patches for 1.8, and there’s even more to come in 1.9! However, we know we’re not the only ones with ideas for improvement. Lately it feels like the community has had a lot to share in regard to making Elgg run faster and serve more users, and that is exciting! |

GSoC Student Intro - RavindraHello Elgg! I'm Ravindra Nath Kakarla from India (blacktooth on #elgg). I am doing my third year undergraduate course in Computer Science at GITAM University which is located in Vishakhapatnam. I was introduced to Open Source two years back. The principles and ideas of Open Source fascinate me. Since then, I have been developing most of applications using the Open Source technologies. I can comfortably program in C, PHP, Java, Python and JavaScript. Web development is one of my favourite domains of programming. Some of my projects are hosted at bitbucket. |

Welcome, GSoC Students! We are delighted to announce and welcome the three students that have been chosen to join us for Google Summer of Code this year! As mentioned previously, there were many high quality applications and it was very hard to turn away so many. The students we selected truly went above and beyond to set themselves apart during the application process not only as skilled developers, but as willing contributors to open source and excited believers in Elgg. |

Elgg 1.8: JavascriptWhen I first started working with Elgg, my whole team was very interested in making a slick webapp out of it. Let’s just say that didn’t go as planned. Long story short, we ended up with a bunch of nasty, unmaintainable, uncacheable javascript. It was not pretty. We realized we needed a more systematic, standardized approach than just slapping on new interactive features using jQuery and jQuery UI. The Elgg Core Team agreed, so in 1.8 we’ve implemented a new javascript framework for Elgg on top of jQuery with the goal of laying a solid foundation for ajax-driven development. |

Elgg's New CSS FrameworkImagine trying to build a house without tools. If you’re like me, you’d be lucky to finish at all, let alone make it an efficient, enjoyable process. It’s just not something you’d do unless you’re the kind of person who likes doing that for fun. Up until now, Elgg theming has felt a bit like that to me. It’s daunting, and there’s a lot of reinventing the wheel to do before you can even really get started.
Elgg 1.8 is changing all that.

Autoloading classes in Elgg 1.8One of the big refactors that we've been working on in Elgg 1.8 involves autoloading classes rather than explicitly including them every time the Elgg engine is loaded. This has two primary intended benefits. |
